Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Addresses President Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from City

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a confrontation with President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup matches from Gillette Stadium, situated 22 miles southwest of Boston.

Mayor Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast recently to address criticism from the White House, which had labeled her as "radical left." Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."

Much of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even the president, can change it.

She added, "We live in a time where for drama, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting what Boston stands for." She finished by stressing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."

Trump's Statements and FIFA's Involvement

Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen with President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and Club World Cup trophies to Trump as gifts.

On Tuesday, President Trump was asked about unrest in a Boston neighborhood that included a police car being burned. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's great."

He added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also specifically targeted Wu, saying, "Their mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Information

President Trump has previously suggested that he would take the same conversation with Infantino about moving games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 host cities across the continent.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is scheduled to be played from 11 June to July 19 in the coming year.
