Courageous Rail Staff Member Receives Life-Threatening Injuries Amid Mass Stabbing Incident on Express Train

A brave train employee who intervened to save travelers during a multiple knife incident on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Incident

Surveillance footage allegedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through compartments.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in custody for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Response and Aftermath

The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have now been discharged from medical care.

A witness filmed the individual brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous member of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained officers,” said a senior police officer.

Union Reaction and Calls for Action

Train unions were quick to praise staff and demand more measures. One labor leader said he would be “seeking immediate meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest available assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.

Another union leader urged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine safety, to support the impacted workers, and to ensure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Praised for Quick Thinking

The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He did not stop the service in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,” explained a association official.

Additional Information

Police stated they received the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted initially thinking if the situation was a holiday joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was serious.

Police have confirmed there is no evidence to indicate the event was a terrorist incident and have asked the public to provide with any additional details.

Train services on the affected route are anticipated to have disruption until the following day, with passengers advised to defer their journeys where possible.

Individuals with information that could assist the inquiry are asked to contact police by texting a designated number with a case code.
