JP Morgan Demands Biometric Data for Corporate HQ Access
The banking leader has told personnel working at its new main office in NYC that they are required to submit their biological identifiers to enter the high-value building.
Change from Optional to Required
The financial firm had previously planned for the collection of physical identifiers at its recently opened skyscraper to be optional.
Nevertheless, workers of the biggest American bank who have commenced employment at the main office since August have been sent communications stating that physical scan entry was now "required".
Understanding the Biometric System
The new entry system requires staff to provide their eye patterns to gain access entry points in the lobby instead of using their access passes.
Office Complex Information
The bank's headquarters, which reportedly required an investment of three billion dollars to develop, will eventually function as a home for thousands of staff members once it is entirely staffed in the coming months.
Protection Reasoning
The banking institution did not provide a statement but it is assumed that the employment of biometric data for access is designed to make the premises better protected.
Special Cases
There are exceptions for some employees who will continue to have the option to use a badge for admission, although the requirements for who will utilize more traditional ID access remains unclear.
Complementary Digital Tools
Alongside the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the bank has also launched the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which serves as a virtual ID and hub for worker amenities.
The platform permits staff to manage visitor access, navigate building layouts of the facility and pre-order food from the building's 19 on-site dining vendors.
Broader Safety Concerns
The introduction of enhanced security measures comes as business organizations, especially those with substantial activities in the city, look to strengthen protection following the shooting of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in July.
The CEO, the boss of the healthcare company, was fatally shot not far from the financial district.
Potential Wider Implementation
It is not known if JP Morgan intends to deploy the biometric system for staff at its locations in other major financial centres, such as the UK capital.
Employee Tracking Developments
The move comes amid discussion over the employment of technology to monitor employees by their organizations, including observing workplace presence.
In recent months, all staff members on flexible arrangements were instructed they have to report to the office five days a week.
Management Commentary
The organization's head, the financial executive, has referred to the company's state-of-the-art tower as a "impressive representation" of the organization.
The executive, one of the global financial leaders, lately alerted that the likelihood of the American markets experiencing a decline was far greater than many financiers believed.
