RFU Preparing to Ban Men's Players Signing with R360 Competition from International Duty

The Rugby Football Union is poised to confirm that men's athletes signing contracts with the R360 competition will be banned from representing England, with an official statement expected as early as the coming week.

Breakaway League Encounters Opposition from Traditional Sport Bodies

Backed by Mike Tindall rebel series has secured funding from investment firms to begin a condensed competition in October next year, but the sport's traditional powerbrokers are lining up to resist them.

The global players' association has informed its players that it will not endorse the upcoming competition.

Our goal is for all athletes to participate in R360 and be able to play internationally if selected, which is why we have designed the series to not conflict with international windows.

RFU Seeks Coordinated Action from Worldwide Associations

England's rugby body is reportedly pushing for a unified response from northern and southern hemisphere unions, and has suggested a shared announcement stating that any athlete joining R360 won't be eligible for national team play.

However, a formal agreement is still pending.

Women's League Stays Unclear as RFU Seeks Clarity

The governing body's position on the female tournament is more ambiguous, as it has received contradictory details from R360 over when it will take place.

Although the inaugural competition is scheduled to begin next October, in 2027 a extended R360 is planned to begin in April, overlapping with the women’s Six Nations Championship.

England's rugby authority will not permit any of its 32 centrally contracted England women’s players to miss the Six Nations, but with R360 allegedly providing six-figure salaries to several England women's team players, an accommodation could be reached if a scheduling conflict is avoided.

Potential Split in Champion Team Poses Significant Problem

Risk of disunity among the coach's champion team creates a serious problem for the RFU, and the financial incentives available may compel it to be more flexible.

Inaugural R360 tournament next year is due to feature four women’s teams and eight men’s sides, with the opening games set for October 2, 2026.

International Association Refuses to Endorse R360

The new league faced another setback when the global players' union (the association), which acts for leading men’s and women’s players in the world, notified its players that it would not endorse the tournament.

While union officials met with R360 on the sidelines of the Lions tour recently, their communication to members characterised the meetings as a fact-finding mission.

In recent months, multiple reports has been in the media about the planned R360 competition and we are aware that lately, a preliminary long-form player contract may have been circulated by R360 to players and/or player agents.

While IRPA and IRPA members have had some discussions with R360 representatives, these discussions have been focused on fact-finding to understand the substantive detail about the financial structure, the tournament, its execution and its relationship with the existing ecosystem.

Comprehensive details about the competition remains unavailable and the competition does not at present have official sanction from World Rugby.

World Rugby Sanction Still Awaited

R360 is still awaiting approval by the sport's world governing body, with sources revealing that it had withdrawn a planned application in last month.

Plans are scheduled for resubmission in June next year, but sources have suggested that the competition will begin the following year regardless of whether they receive official sanction.

Failure to balance moving to the new global franchise tournament with an national team role could have a significant effect on R360's recruitment plans.

The organization is believed to have signed pre-contract agreements with more than 200 players, 80% of whom have represented their countries in the past two years.
