Tests Show Navalny Had Been Poisoned in Jail, Yulia Navalnaya Asserts

The spouse of the late political activist Navalny has declared that he was killed due to toxic exposure while detained in an Arctic penal colony in last year.

Through a recording shared on the internet, Navalny’s wife revealed that examination of secretly acquired materials performed by research facilities in different states demonstrated her husband had been assassinated.

She did not share information regarding the toxic agent suspected, the samples or the analysis – but called on the facilities to publish their conclusions.

The critic – an anti-corruption campaigner and a leading political adversary – passed away unexpectedly in detention on February 16th, 2024 at the age of 47.

Prior Incident

Two years prior, he was poisoned with a chemical weapon and nearly lost his life. Upon his return to the country, authorities detained him at the airport.

When of his death, he was in prison for multiple years on politically motivated accusations and had just been moved to a prison camp in the Arctic Circle.

Those close to him and associates at his FBK have repeatedly claimed the Kremlin authorities played a role in his death.

Smuggled Evidence

She revealed that posthumously, his supporters managed to secretly move forensic evidence abroad and that a pair of labs in separate nations had found he had been exposed to toxins.

She did not share the location of the facilities – but she suggested that they were not releasing the results due to geopolitical reasons.

“They are reluctant uncomfortable facts to emerge at the wrong time,” his widow commented.

She further indicated that she would encounter resistance in attempting to examine her husband’s death: Being the widow, naturally, but there is no official investigation, there are no legal grounds to provide evidence to you.’”

“Yet I possess reasons. Not judicial, but principled motives.”

His widow emphasized that he was her partner, confidant and dearest individual – and a representation of aspiration for a improved nation for this land”.

“I understand he was a figure to you too,” she said referencing pictures of Navalny’s Moscow funeral which drew thousands despite threats from the government avoid participation.

“I won’t remain mute. I affirm that the Russian president is guilty of murdering my husband, Navalny... I call on the institutions which conducted studies to make the results public.”

Earlier this week, Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov commented he was not informed of Navalnaya’s statements.

Last Moments

Via the footage released on Wednesday, Navalnaya also detailed the closing moments of her husband based on what she said was statements by employees at the prison, which is yet to be corroborated.

According to her, on the day he died, the activist was brought outside the exercise yard but experienced discomfort. When he was taken back to his cell “he lay down on the floor, drew his legs inward, and started moaning in pain... then he started vomiting”.

“He suffered seizures... the prison guards viewed his distress through the grate of the cell aperture,” his widow stated, referencing the claimed accounts.

Emergency medical services did not arrive until over half an hour after he fell sick, his spouse said, and he succumbed soon thereafter. Jail officials later told his mother that her son had experienced a sudden medical collapse. Afterward, official probes said the death had been caused by a physical ailment and cardiac irregularity.

His colleagues have published newly revealed photos on online platforms allegedly illustrating his cell on the day he died and the small outdoor space where he was permitted outside.

Wider Impact

The Kremlin leader, who deliberately abstained from referencing the activist while he was living, briefly referred to him posthumously by saying that a demise was “always a sad event”.

The Russian president also said he had approved a arranged detainee trade between the dissident and “some people” held in Western jails, on the stipulation that he did not come home to the country.

“It is what it is. One can do to be done about it,” Putin said.

Virtually no possibility Moscow will provide additional statements on the incident.

His popularity and internet savviness long concerned the government, while senior figures were provoked by his investigations into high-profile official misconduct.

After his demise the nation lost the last prominent opposition figure who challenged the current leadership.

Many of his associates have been jailed or have left the country. She is subject to detention, and they reside overseas.

Government suppression on civil society intensified further following the armed aggression of the neighboring country in early 2022, and draconian legislation resulting in widespread detentions have suppressed criticism.

During his time and afterward he managed to bring forth large gatherings onto the streets. A multitude of supporters gathered for his funeral in the capital in spring 2024 despite justified concerns of a official retaliation.

Scarcely any opposition gatherings have been held in Russia afterward.
