The Eagles Involved in Discussions to Appoint The Special One Following Termination of Lage

The Portuguese manager is reportedly in serious talks regarding a comeback to the Lisbon-based club, immediately after the termination of their former head coach. The experienced tactician earlier led the club for a brief period back in 2000, and if appointed, he would soon meet a fixture against one of his former clubs in the European competition set for the end of September.

Chairman’s Statement Addressing Shift

Rui Costa announced the firing of Bruno Lage in a media briefing conducted following the team’s loss at home against the visiting team in the European tournament. The president declared: “I believe this is the time for a change, specifically to avert harming the term. Consequently, the head coach who comes in should be a trophy-winning leader. A coach representing a club of this magnitude has to be a professional possessing the ability to raise this team to the heights we demand and secure the honors we desire.”

His Latest Career Developments

Mourinho’s last role was at Turkish club Fenerbahce, who let go of him in recent weeks after they were unable to advance to the group stage of the UCL.

Mourinho initially achieved fame during his tenure at Porto, the national opponents, where he steered them to triumph in the Europa League in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004. Following that achievement, he moved to the Blues and won Premier League championships in the 2004–05 season and 2006, plus another title in the 2014–15 season during his second stint.

Furthermore, he guided Inter Milan to European success in 2010 and, although he could not bring back United to their former glory, he was able to steer them to the UEL title in the 2016–17 season. His spell at Spurs ended without a trophy when he was dismissed just days ahead of the side was due to play the Citizens in the 2021 League Cup final.

More recently, he claimed the third-tier European trophy with the Giallorossi in 2022 prior to assuming control of the Turkish club in the summer in 2024. It is worth noting that the Portuguese side will wrap up their UCL group stage against home match facing the Spanish giants.
