The England manager Criticizes Wembley Crowd Support Despite Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his regret that the Three Lions team did not get more backing from the Wembley spectators during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday evening.
The manager was happy to see his team showcase their winning momentum, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Saka inside the first 20 minutes effectively ending the match. Yet, he was displeased with the mood at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half training days to get ready against a well-trained team and we did very well,” the coach commented. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. It was quiet. There was no support from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just Wales fans for half an hour, it’s regrettable because the team deserved more support today.”
“I maintain this statement. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a derby. I hoped for a bit more support in phases where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Performance
Apart from potentially starting a fight with fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by omitting Jude Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. But the choice was validated by Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel said. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his position.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who face Belgium in a key qualifying match on next week, take lessons from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this match,” the manager said. “I need to see our standing. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? Today gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Watkins was substituted at the break after clattering into a post and is a concern when England play Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
