UK Broadens Methanol Poisoning Advisory List with 11 Countries

Methanol caution sign

The UK government has added 11 further nations to its travel advisory list regarding the threats of methanol toxicity from adulterated beverages.

The revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Just recently, the government had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to multiple notable incidents such as the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance commonly employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not designed for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.

Government Advice for Travelers

Authorities minister Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While consuming alcohol overseas, stick to reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.

"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a headache that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – get medical help fast."

The complete list of countries noted as posing a risk of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
