UN Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Prior to Presidential Visit
The UN Security Council gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that ousted the previous leader in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of domestic strife.
America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations in July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and supportive states for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions for the first time during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through Arab nations.
Following that encounter, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".
The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting is not his initial visit to the US in the current year. This past fall, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
