Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
